Maya Irving is an emerging visual artist currently based in Wurundjeri country, Warrandyte. Maya works with movement, intuition and colour to convey her experience of both her inner and outer landscapes.
Maya builds up her artworks with layers of free-movement, mess-making and minimal expectation. Through this process she falls into an embodied state, devoid of a critical mind. Her work is energetic and responsive. Maya hopes that through sharing her honest, vulnerable self, it can connect with others in a way that is safe, warm and inviting. She seeks to inspire playfulness, self-reflection and a curiosity with the erotic self. Maya likes to think of her artworks as if they were a warm embrace, a shoulder to cry on, or a cheeky friend at the park.
Recently she held a solo exhibition at Brunswick Street Gallery titled ‘Your Weight in Me,’ a sensual and vulnerable expression of her experience unravelling washes of grief and anger.
